Configure File Types

There is a feature called Reference for you to add reference(s) to external file or URL into diagram element. You can open the referenced file or URL to get more information of the model in later stage. From Visual Paradigm Suite 3.0, you can configure to use specific application or command to open different types of file and specify your favorite web browser to open URL. The system default handling method will be used if you have not configure the application or command to handle a particular file type.

Configure application/command for file types

1. Select Tools > Options... from the main menu to open the Options dialog box.
2. Select File Types from the list at the left hand side of the Options dialog box.
This shows the File Types page, where you can define applications to associate to particular file extensions.
3. Press on the upper Add... button.
This shows a dialog box where you can add file extension.
4. Specify the Extension. Any file reference with this extension will be opened by the particular application or command. Note that for a valid extension a dot is required to put in front of the name of that extension, such as '.doc'.
5. Specify the Application/Command. The application or command for opening a file reference with file extension same as that defined in the Extension field.
A command can be entered directly to the text field, and can include application arguments, while an application an be chosen from a file chooser by pressing ... next to the text field.
6. Specify the Name of this application or command. This is an optional field for identifying this file extension.
7. Click OK to close the dialog box.
8. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

Open referenced file

1. Move the cursor on the element that contain a file reference. This shows several resource icons around the element.
2. Press on the References resource icon at the bottom left corner of the element.
3. This popup up a list of references that are added to the element.
4. Click on the reference that you want to open.
If the file extension of the selected file match with a user defined extension, the application or command specified will be executed to open the file. Otherwise, the file will be opened by the system.
