This tutorial is aimed to introduce BP-VA (Business Process Visual ARCHITECT) in brief. In this tutorial, you will try to start BP-VA, create simple business process diagram with pools, lanes, events, tasks and sub-processes. You will also try to make use of Animacian to animate your diagram.


  1. Start Business Process Visual ARCHITECT (BP-VA).

  2. Specify the workspace directory, such as C:\vpworkspace.

  3. Open the Model Explorer. Right click on the project root node and select Model > New Model... from the popup menu.

  4. Name the model Current Process Model. Click OK to continue.

  5. Right click on the model Current Process Model and select Diagram > Business Process Modeling > Business Process Diagram from the popup menu.

  6. Name the diagram Order Sushi.

  7. Select Pool from diagram toolbar. Click on the diagram to create pools Customer and Restaurant.

  8. Create lanes in pool Restaurant. Right click on pool Restaurant and select Add Lane from the popup menu.

  9. Name the lane Waiter. Create another lane and name it as Chief.

  10. Select Start Event from diagram toolbar. Click in the pool Customer to create a start event. Move the mouse pointer over the start event. Press on the resource icon Sequence Flow > Task. Drag it out and create a task Order Meal.

  11. Make use of resource icon to create a task Write Down Order from Order Meal. The task should be put in lane Waiter.

  12. Create task Pass Order to Sushi Bar from Write Down Order. Move the mouse pointer to Pass Order to Sushi Bar. Make use of the resource icon Sequence/Message Flow > Sub-Process to create a sub-process Prepare Meal in lane Chief.

  13. We need to complete the process with an end event. Move the mouse pointer to Prepare Meal. Press on the generic resource and drag to the right hand side of Prepare Meal.

  14. Select the in popup menu End Event > Event Event.

    Up to now, the diagram should look like this:

  15. We need to create a sub-process diagram. Click on + in Prepare Meal and select New Business Process Diagram from the popup menu.

  16. This drills down to a new sub-process diagram. Right click on the diagram and select Add Pools/Lanes from Parent Diagram... from the popup menu.

  17. Select Restaurant and Chief in the Select Pools/Lanes dialog box. Click OK to continue.

  18. Right click on the pool Restaurant and select Presentation Options > Auto Stretch > On from the popup menu.

  19. Complete the diagram:

  20. Go back to the parent diagram by clicking on the link above the diagram.

  21. Right click on the task Order Meal and select Open Specification... from the popup menu.

  22. At the bottom of the specification, enter The customer read the manual, and call the waiter to place and order in the documentation.

  23. Now, we need to record audio documentation. Click Record....

  24. In the Record Voice dialog box, click Record to start recording. Speak The customer read the manual, and call the waiter to place an order. Make sure your microphone is ready in order to perform this step.

  25. Click Stop to stop recording.

  26. Select Tools > Animacian... from the main menu.

  27. In the Business Process Diagram Animacian dialog box, select Path 1.

  28. Click Play.

  29. Watch the animation. A tiny black ball will appear an walk through the flow objects. Flow objects passed will be highlighted in purple.
